Macerata is known around the world thanks to its open air festival held every year.
The Festival is held in July at which it takes part an international audience that is hosted in Sferisterio having a capacity of 5,000 people. It is a neoclassical arena built in the nineteenth century by the architect Ireneo Aleandri.
This arena was originally used for the game of “Palla a Bracciale”, for riding shows, rides, circuses and bingo.
The Sferisterio was inaugurated in 1829 with festivities that lasted for two days.
